THe Motion Mindset: Tween Therapy Group

learning in, about, and through our bodies

Does it seem like your daughter suddenly flipped from exuberantly bounding through the world to now constantly monitoring her appearance, interactions, and every presentation of herself? Or perhaps she has always been a little nervous and looked to you for reassurance, but now instead of being her protector, apparently you're just “super embarrassing.” Girlhood has never been simple. Some of us saw a glimpse of hope in the girl power early aughts…then along came Instagram and group chats.

What’s a parent to do? Luckily, we do know a few protective factors for girls entering puberty: defined relationships with trusted adults, moderated activities with other kids (rather than kids sitting around talking about other kids), learning about their bodies in a safe, anti-racist, size-inclusive manner, and practicing self-regulation strategies like mindful movement. The key is doing things together--not just talking, texting, or scrolling.

Group Design:

This summer, The Motion Mindset: Tween Therapy Group at Small Space Education and Therapy offers just this in a 5 week group. We’ll make, create, play, learn, and process. This is an opportunity for girls+ to learn about and through their bodies, developing more physical competence through creative crafting, movement, and discussion activities covering body positivity, emotional regulation, and online safety. This group is appropriate for girls+ managing anxiety, adjustment, and mood disorders and is a great fit for girls with ADHD and emotional fluctuations.
